Smartsheet for Docusign IAM

A Smartsheet Docusign integration that runs inside Workflow Builder: read row data into agreement workflows, write status and values back to the sheet, and attach signed documents to the exact row they belong to.

Compare the routes

Three ways to connect Smartsheet and Docusign

The common routes start in different places: two send documents from Smartsheet, this one uses Smartsheet from inside Docusign workflows.

Smartsheet's native Document Builder integration

Starts in Smartsheet: it merges row data into a Docusign template and sends it for e-signature from the sheet. Built for generating and sending documents from rows.

Zapier

Zaps pass data between the two products and run outside Docusign. Useful for simple event-based recipes, with the automation maintained in a third platform.

This app

Smartsheet for Docusign (this app)

Starts in Docusign: native Workflow Builder steps read sheet data, write status back, and attach the executed copy to the exact row automatically. Signed document automation with no middleware, and many teams use it alongside the native integration.

Capabilities

What it adds inside Workflow Builder

Once installed, the app's actions appear as native workflow steps. No code, no middleware, no separate sync jobs.

Read from Smartsheet

Pull row data mid-workflow, choosing exactly which Smartsheet fields become workflow variables. A trigger column such as "Next for Docusign" tells the app which row to use, and the retrieved values map into every later step.

Writeback to Smartsheet

Update an existing value or create a new row, mapping Docusign fields to Smartsheet columns. Mapping criteria pin the write to the right row, so a contract status changes in the sheet at workflow runtime, not when someone remembers to edit it.

File Write to Smartsheet

Store signed documents as attachments on the Smartsheet row they belong to. A Record ID variable in the subfolder targets the row; if the row cannot be found, the file attaches at sheet level instead.

Duplicate-safe row handling

Chain Read and Writeback so workflow runs never collide. Read the row flagged for processing, then write its status to "In progress" so the next instance of the workflow skips it.

Live in an afternoon

To connect Smartsheet to Docusign, install the app from the App Center like any Docusign extension, authorize your Smartsheet account, and add the steps to a workflow. Full setup, configuration and known behaviors are covered in the documentation.

What operations teams run on it

Vendor onboarding

The sheet drives the paperwork

Track vendors in an onboarding sheet and let the workflow pull Vendor ID and Vendor Name straight from the row to feed the agreement steps. When the signed pack comes back, it lands as an attachment on that vendor's row.

Status tracking

Project and agreement status stay aligned

Project tracking lives in Smartsheet; agreement status lives in Docusign. A Writeback step updates the contract status column as the workflow moves, so nobody reconciles the two by hand.

Row-level archive

Signed documents land on the record

The signed envelope file attaches to the exact row it concerns, targeted by the Record ID. The sheet holds both the tracking data and the executed document, in one place.

FAQ

The Smartsheet Docusign integration, answered

Does Smartsheet integrate with Docusign?
Yes, in two directions. Smartsheet's native Document Builder integration starts in Smartsheet: it merges row data into a Docusign template and sends it for signature. Smartsheet for Docusign starts in Docusign: it adds Smartsheet steps inside Workflow Builder, so any agreement workflow can read sheet data, write status back, and attach the signed document to the row. This page covers the Workflow Builder extension.
How is this different from Smartsheet's native Docusign integration?
The native integration runs from inside Smartsheet and is built for generating and sending documents from sheet rows. Smartsheet for Docusign runs inside Docusign Workflow Builder as native workflow steps, so Smartsheet becomes a data source and system of record for any Docusign agreement workflow, including ones that involve other apps. Many teams use both.
Can I connect Docusign and Smartsheet with Zapier instead?
Yes, Zapier can pass data between the two apps through zaps that run outside Docusign. Smartsheet for Docusign takes a different approach: its Read, Writeback, and File Write actions run as native steps inside Docusign Workflow Builder, with no middleware account and the connection managed in your Docusign admin.
Can Docusign automatically attach the signed document to a Smartsheet row?
Yes. Add the File Write to Smartsheet step to a Workflow Builder workflow and the completed document is stored as an attachment on the exact row it belongs to, using your row-matching rule, with no manual download or upload.
Is this the official Smartsheet integration for Docusign?
It is the Smartsheet app listed on the Docusign App Center, built and operated by Fluidlabs, a Docusign Build IAM Specialized Partner. It shipped through Docusign's review; Smartsheet did not build it and does not operate it.
Does it work with Docusign Maestro?
Yes. Maestro is now called Docusign Workflow Builder, and that is where Smartsheet for Docusign runs. After installation, three Smartsheet steps appear in the Workflow Builder step picker: Read from Smartsheet, Writeback to Smartsheet, and File Write to Smartsheet.
What do I need to use it?
A Docusign account with admin rights to install apps from the Docusign App Center, access to Docusign Workflow Builder, and a Smartsheet account you can log in to and authorize when connecting the app.
Where does our Smartsheet data go?
Data flows between Smartsheet and your Docusign account at workflow runtime: a Read step pulls the row fields you selected, a Writeback step updates or creates rows, and a File Write step stores documents as row attachments. Fluidlabs operates the app under ISO 27001 certification, hosted in the US region on AWS.
How long does setup take?
Installation is a short five-step flow: find the app in the Docusign App Center, click Install App, choose a Private or Shared connection and name it, then log in to Smartsheet and allow access. The longer part is configuring your first workflow, where you pick the sheet, select the fields, and set the row-matching rule.
What does support look like?
Named support at docusign-support@fluidlabs.com, monitored weekdays 09:00-19:00 CET, with priority-based response targets set out in the Service Terms.
Can Fluidlabs build the workflow for us?
Yes. Fluidlabs builds Docusign extension apps and the workflows around them as a service, the same practice that built and operates this app. See the Docusign extension app development service page to scope it.
